How does the American Idol wildcard show work?
I read that the 4th place vote-getter gets into the wildcard show. (why didn’t they announce this person on the show instead of telling everyone they were going home.) The other singers are judges choices and the total number of participants may be 10, 11 or 12.
This is where I’m confused. Does American vote or do the judges determine the best singers for those final 3 slots based on their performance in this show?
Why is American Idol being so vague about the wildcard show?

I was wondering the same thing and then I found this answer on another question about wildcard. Here is the link:

I have watched and voted in all AI shows from the beginning. I dislike the fact that I had to vote for only one guy, one girl and one wild card pick. I wanted to at least put half of them through. It makes us voters out to be the judges on the basis of one song. Many contestants improve over time and will now never get the chance.
So much has changed and not for the better. I do not know what to expect anymore and feel badly for many contestants on the new AI. I found it excruciating to just pick three so soon. Now they are going to have the show on Wednesday and results on Thursday next week. They have me guessing and wondering. I don’t know what to expect anymore. I am very disappointed, as much talent will not get a second chance.
In answer to your question, all I heard Ryan Seacrest say is that we are to vote for one guy, one girl and a wild card. I didn’t hear anything about a 4th vote. It leaves me in wonder and confused. In the past, when we began voting, it was out of the judges hands and in ours.
Ryan Seacrest made a mistake and said the top 16 from one group and there were only 12 at a time. At least I got 2 out of 3 that I wanted in.

You’re right. They are being so vague. They haven’t explained to us how the wild card show is going to work. I guess we just have to wait and see. Ryan should have explained it tonight. Oh well, we’re getting used to waiting!!!!
