Well I think there is more than just singing, although the talent MUST be there. There is a likeability factor involved. People have to like the person (or the person must give off that vibe that they are likeable).

American Idol displays who the people think that the best singer is, even if the singer isn’t even close to being the best. Remember, there are millions of 12 year old out there voting because they think a contestant is cute. This is turn gets other people much more talented voted off before they should be. It has much more to do with self image in my opinion.

American idol is looking for the whole package. Singers today not only have to be able to sing but dance and look good. In the tryouts singing is what gets you to hollywood but in the end america is an image based country. They want to hear and see something beautiful.
